


The RYA VHF/DSC Radio Shore based course covers the safe, legal and correct use of VHF/DSC (Very High Frequency/Digital Selective Calling) Radio equipment and other radio operated safety equipment such as EPIRBs and SARTs. Candidates will use special training radios throughout the day, learning the basic operations of the equipment as well as the more advanced DSC and use of the Distress button. Candidates will also learn the phonetic alphabet and correct radio speech using roll play scripts and practising Mayday distress calls and other related Safety and Urgency procedures.
REMEMBER IT IS ILLEGAL TO OPERATE A VHF RADIO WITHOUT A LICENCE
Course Aim: To teach the correct use of marine radios including GMDSS. Routine, distress, urgency and safety procedures.
Duration: The course is conducted over 1 day of 8 hours including the exam.
Experience: No previous experience is necessary, but knowledge of the phonetic alphabet is advantageous.
Minimum Age: There is no minimum age to take the course and exam, however Operator certificates cannot be issued until the candidate is 16 years old.
